Angels On Earth

I’ve always heard angels walk among us but never truly believed it was real. Until I had several encounters with unexplained blessings that touch me to this day, I should be dead by now. I’ve had at least two wrecks that should have killed me, but they didn’t. I survived a miscarriage with so much blood loss that I’m shocked that I didn’t die. I’ve run with the devil multiple times and still found my way back through surviving rape, excessive alcohol and drug abuse, and a violent relationship. Some days I have felt the sting of loneliness and been uncertain why I am still on earth. That’s when it always feels like angels walk on earth as much as in heaven because when kind acts happen, it feels like it’s a type of divine intervention.

I’ve spoken to several people who have stories of miracles in their lives over the years. Some of them were dealing with recovery from a disease or illness. One of them is the recipient of a kidney transplant. Their angel is the donor who saved their life. One of the mothers that I know well will tell you that the woman whose heart went to save her daughter is the angel they never got to thank. Those that donate organs to others are the angels that walk among us. Those who intervene when life throws trauma in our direction are heroes and angels, yet they will never see themselves in that context. We are all encountering different angels. Some of them are the messengers that show up and disappear when we least expect them to, while others leave a lasting imprint on our souls.

The first time I had a wreck, I was about sixteen. I had been to a church lock-in and stayed up for over twenty-four hours. My friend Renee and I were on our way home, and she was following me. I fell asleep at the wheel and hit a tree. All I remember is seeing my life flash before my eyes, but it felt like something took the wheel and turned it so that I could stop without injury. I broke the axle on the car and wailed to Renee, saying, “Nee, I hit a tree! I gotta get the car out!” We both laughed, and I was so scared of what my mom would say. But when I came out of the car, a perfect star had formed on my windshield. Renee and I commented that there was a guardian angel in that car with me that day.

When I went to East Carolina University, I ran with a rough crowd. I had never dealt with the type of rowdy people until I went to school. I was protected from my family and was a rebel waiting to get away from my family. I broke so many rules and created a few along the way. One night after drinking a lot, I found myself alone with some of these men that roughly handled things. I grew up quickly. I learned how to stand up for myself, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t find myself in compromised situations more than once. One night, one of the men pulled out a knife and told me how things would be. I don’t know what happened next because he talked rough and then passed out. I have to believe I had a guardian angel with me at that moment.

Over the years, I have been in too many scary situations. If it wasn’t a wreck that almost did me in, it was pneumonia. Every time, I felt the presence of angels on earth. I may not follow the Bible and have the verses memorized, but I know that people can’t explain many things in this world. There is a feeling of peace and tranquility that comes over so many people when the world feels like it’s collapsing around us.

My cousin has had a little girl dealing with seizures for years now. There is no doubt that she has angels on this earth. Many people in the medical community surround her with love. She has the unwavering support of those closest to her. She is an angel to her parents, who thought they would never have children. One of her parents is a cancer survivor. They never thought they would be physically capable of having a child of their own, but they were given a gift from a higher power.

So many people have stories that they felt the presence of angels on earth. While none of us may know when we will have an experience with one, there is one thing for sure, when you least expect something incredible to happen, miracles and angels will often make themselves known. I hope you can experience angels on earth at some point in your life. If you have experience with them, I hope you share those stories with others so that they can have hope when things happen that break their hearts. As you go into the weekend, keep your hearts open so that you can see when angels are around you. They don’t have to be celestial to be accurate. Sometimes the actions we encounter are something that helps us through the most trying of times. Have a great weekend, everyone.
